Surabaya is a major port city in East Java known for its industrial base and coastal geography.
The city’s Tanjung Perak port remains central to shipping and trade. Juanda International Airport in nearby Sidoarjo connects the region domestically and internationally. The city marks the Battle of Surabaya annually on 10 November, commemorating its role in Indonesia’s independence struggle.
Urban growth has transformed surrounding villages into part of the Greater Surabaya metropolitan area, with commercial zones stretching south and west from the historic core.
